Tip Taps, Mainly Used for Processing Medium and Low Carbon Steel, Tool Steel, Cast Steel and a Small Amount of Stainless Steel

Product Overview

The Multipurpose Tip Tap is a highly versatile cutting tool designed specifically for threading tool steel (e.g., H13, D2) and cast iron. Its robust construction and carefully engineered geometry enable reliable performance in both through-hole and blind-hole threading applications. This versatility makes it a valuable addition to any toolroom or manufacturing facility, reducing the need for multiple specialized taps. Whether used in manual or automated machining processes, it delivers consistent threading results.

Features

Material: Constructed from high-speed steel (HSS) with a TiN coating, this tip tap offers enhanced wear resistance. The TiN coating also reduces friction during threading, making the process smoother and extending the tool's life.

Flute Design: Available with 3–4 flutes, featuring either a spiral point (for through holes) or spiral groove (for blind holes). This design ensures efficient chip removal, which is essential for producing clean, accurate threads. Proper chip evacuation prevents chip jamming and potential damage to the tap or workpiece.

Thread Profile: Compatible with ISO metric, UN, and NPT threads, with diameters ranging from M3 to M20. This wide compatibility allows the tap to be used across a diverse range of threading applications.

Cutting Parameters

Speed: 5–10 m/min for tool steel and 8–12 m/min for cast iron, reflecting the different hardness and machinability of these materials.

Feed Rate: Synchronized with the thread pitch, such as 1.5 mm/rev for M10×1.5 threads, ensuring accurate thread formation.

Application

Industry: Utilized in tool and die making, automotive repair, and general fabrication industries. These sectors require reliable threading tools for various components and assemblies.

Operations: Specialized in threading of hardened steel molds, cast iron engine blocks, and industrial machinery components. The tap's performance ensures that threads are strong and properly formed, contributing to the overall integrity of the assembled products.

Machining Scenarios: Suitable for both manual and CNC machining operations. The use of coolant is recommended to extend the tip tap's life by reducing heat and friction during threading.

FAQ

Q: Can it be used for stainless steel?

A: While primarily optimized for tool steel and cast iron, it can thread stainless steel with adjustments. It is recommended to reduce the speed to 3–5 m/min and increase lubrication to handle the higher work-hardening tendency of stainless steel.

Q: How to prolong tip tap life?

A: Using sulfur-based cutting fluids helps reduce friction and heat. Additionally, avoiding exceeding the recommended speeds prevents thermal breakdown of the tool material, thus prolonging the tip tap's operational life .
